Home automation notifications on the TV
If your home automation already sends you Telegram messages (Home Assistant, Jeedom, Domoticz, Node-RED, a script), Tevegram can show them on the TV, over whatever is playing, without any other integration: enable the overlay on the bot's conversation and every message it sends appears as a bubble on screen.
Step by step for your system
What you need
- An Android TV or Google TV device with Tevegram installed and signed in.
- A Telegram bot that already sends you messages, or a group where your automation posts. Home Assistant, Jeedom and Domoticz all have a built-in Telegram notifier; any script can use the Bot API.
- The Android permission "Display over other apps" granted to Tevegram.
Setup
Point your automation at a dedicated chat. Simplest setup: create a Telegram group named "Home" (or use the bot's private chat), and have your automation send its alerts there. Keeping alerts in one chat makes the next step a single toggle.
Enable the overlay on that chat in Tevegram. In the Chats tab, select the "Home" group or the bot and turn on its notification bell. Allow "Display over other apps" when Android asks.
Test with a message. Trigger a notification from your automation (or type a message in the group from your phone). It should appear over the TV picture within a second or two, then fade out.
Good to know
What shows up
The sender's name and the text of the message, as a bubble over the current picture. Photos sent by the bot (a camera snapshot, for example) show up in the conversation in Tevegram; the overlay is text-first.
Only the chats you choose
The bell is per conversation. Your alerts chat can be on while your other groups stay silent, so the TV only interrupts you for what you decided.
Keep Tevegram alive
The overlay is drawn by Tevegram running in the background. If notifications stop appearing after the TV has been turned off and on, open Tevegram once.
Frequently asked questions
Does Tevegram need a plugin or an API key?
No. It reads your Telegram account like any client. Whatever already reaches your Telegram reaches the TV; the automation side does not change.
Can I get notifications without watching anything?
Yes, as long as the TV is on and Tevegram runs in the background. The overlay appears over the home screen too.
Which systems work?
Anything that can send a Telegram message: Home Assistant (telegram_bot integration), Jeedom (Telegram plugin), Domoticz, Node-RED, openHAB, or a curl call to the Bot API from a script.
